Drug Misuse and Abuse among Community-dwelling Korean-Chinese Elderly in China: A pilot study

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate drug misuse and abuse by Korean-Chinese elderly living in Yanji, China.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The participants were 69 Korean-Chinese elderly aged 65 years over (M±SD=68.1±3.88) who are living in Yanji, China. Data was collected from June to December, 2014. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain subjects` demographic characteristics, and their drug misuse and abuse. Collected data was analysed by descriptive analysis, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA using IBM SPSS 22.0 version program.
Results: The mean of drug misuse and abuse of Korean-Chinese elderly was 4.51 (range: 0∼13.0). There were significant differences in drug misuse and abuse according to age (t=2.07, p=.042) and job (t=2.08, p=.042).
Conclusion: Education programs for preventing drug misuse and abuse of Korean-Chinese elderly should be created and provided among this community.
